The inaugural Steel Sustainability Forum, organised by the Singapore Structural Steel Society (SSSS), provided a vital stage for the industry to discuss the future of construction. As a proud sponsor, Mlion Corporation was front and centre, not just to talk about green initiatives, but to showcase the high-performance hardware that makes those goals a reality: our S460 High-Strength Steel Beams.

For the engineers and developers who visited our booth at the Sands Expo & Convention Centre, the conversation was clear: Higher strength equals higher efficiency.

S460: The New Benchmark for Structural Performance

While S355 has long been the industry workhorse, the technical sessions at the forum highlighted a growing need for materials that do more with less. Our S460 beams, sourced through our exclusive partnership with Maanshan Iron & Steel (Magang), represent a significant leap in yield strength.

With a minimum yield strength of 460 MPa, these beams allow designers to push the boundaries of what is possible in structural engineering. During our discussions with attendees, we focused on the tangible engineering advantages of upgrading to S460:

  • Superior Load-to-Weight Ratio: The increased strength of S460 means you can achieve the same structural capacity using significantly smaller or thinner sections. In many cases, this translates to a 30% reduction in total steel weight for the same project.
  • Increased Useable Space: By utilising slimmer S460 columns and beams, architects can reclaim valuable floor space and increase ceiling heights, a critical factor in Singapore’s high-density urban environment.

Enhanced Fatigue and Stress Resistance: For heavy infrastructure and offshore projects, S460 provides a higher safety margin. Even if a beam faces material loss due to the elements over time, the higher baseline strength ensures it remains well within its performance limits.

Efficiency as a Path to Sustainability

At Mlion, we believe that the most effective way to be sustainable is to be efficient. We shared with forum attendees how the mechanical properties of S460 naturally lead to a better environmental profile without the need for complex offsets:

  1. Reduced Embodied Carbon: The math is simple; using 30% less steel means 30% less carbon emitted during the manufacturing and smelting process.
  2. Streamlined Logistics: Lighter loads mean fewer truck deliveries to the site and the ability to use smaller, more energy-efficient cranes for installation.
  3. Longevity: The robustness of S460 ensures structures are built to last, reducing the need for premature retrofitting or replacement.

RFID and the Reusability of Steel

The Forum also emphasised the importance of traceability in enabling the reuse of steel materials. Currently, the reuse of steel is hindered by a loss of asset information over the usage period, leading to premature scrapping and unnecessary production. Since every metric ton of new steel produces approximately 1.7 metric tons of carbon, this is a critical issue in the battle against global carbon emissions.

Mlion’s GoTagID RFID solution addresses this head-on. By using durable RFID tags encased in steel housing, we ensure that traceability data stays with the material throughout its lifecycle. This allows pre-owned steel to be verified and traded easily, preventing waste and lowering the industry’s carbon footprint.
